Affirming Couples Therapy for Queer & Consensually Nonmonogamous Relationships

Virtual therapy available across New York, Maine, and West Virginia.

Non-monogamy-informed couples therapy offering inclusive support for diverse relationship structures.

“Your relationship doesn’t have to fit any mold for it to work. Let’s uncover what’s getting in the way and find what works uniquely for you.”

- Amanda Bailey, LCPC

You came here to work on your relationship. Not defend it.

Maybe you’ve considered couples therapy before and immediately wondered how much of the session you’d spend explaining yourselves. Will they understand your relationship, or make assumptions about gender, sex, monogamy, who plays what role, or what your relationship is supposed to look like?

Maybe the stress is coming from inside the relationship, or maybe family rejection, coming out, identity changes, being treated differently in public, or figuring out whose spaces actually feel safe has started finding its way between you too.

You may already be carrying enough without sitting across from someone who turns your queerness or relationship structure into the problem when it isn’t.

You want support for your relationship without having to edit it into something easier for someone else to understand.

Your relationship gets to feel like yours.

You get clearer about what actually works for the two of you instead of measuring your relationship against rules that were never built for it. There can be more security, intimacy, honesty, and room for each of you to keep growing without feeling like that growth has to pull you apart.

When family, identity changes, outside pressure, jealousy, boundaries, or changing needs come up, you learn how to face them more like a team instead of letting them quietly create distance between you.

You can talk more openly about what you want your relationship to look like and make those decisions together.

The goal is to feel more connected, more confident in what you are building, and more at home in a relationship that genuinely fits the people in it.

Why me?

One thing I want you to know right away: I’m queer and I work with queer couples. That doesn’t mean I’m going to assume I know your relationship just because we share part of an identity. I want to understand how your relationship works, what matters to each of you, and where things are getting stuck.

The last thing you need is to spend therapy awkwardly explaining why you’re poly, correcting assumptions about your relationship, or wondering whether the person across from you actually gets it. You should be able to come in, be yourselves, and get straight to what’s really happening between you.

Who this type of therapy is for:

○ Queer couples who want support for their relationship without having to explain, defend, or simplify how it works.

○ Monogamous, polyamorous, and ethically nonmonogamous partners, including couples exploring a shift from monogamy, who want space to talk through fear, jealousy, boundaries, and differing comfort levels without assumptions.

○ Lovers navigating family rejection, coming out, visibility, identity shifts, or outside pressure that has started finding its way into the relationship.

○ Those carrying shame and expectations about who they are supposed to be, who want to feel free to show up authentically.

○ Couples where one or both partners are navigating changes in sexuality, gender, attraction, or how they understand themselves within the relationship.

○ Partners who need help sorting out what belongs to the relationship, what is coming from outside of it, and what needs to change.
